How Weighted Grades Work

Most courses do not treat every assignment equally. A final exam might count for 30% of your grade while weekly homework counts for 10%. Your course grade is a weighted average: each score is multiplied by its weight, the products are added, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights.

A Worked Example

Suppose homework (20%) is 92, the midterm (30%) is 85, and a project (25%) is 95. That is (92 ร— 20) + (85 ร— 30) + (95 ร— 25) = 6765, divided by 75 = 90.2% so far. Notice the weights only add to 75% โ€” the remaining 25% is still ungraded, and the calculator handles this correctly.

Planning What You Need

Set a target grade and the calculator solves backwards: it subtracts your earned points from the target total, then divides by the remaining weight. If the answer is above 100%, the target is out of reach โ€” time to talk to your instructor about extra credit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a weighted grade calculated?

Multiply each grade by its weight, add those products, then divide by the total weight. For example, 90% ร— 20 plus 80% ร— 30, divided by 50, equals 84%.

What if my assignment weights don't add up to 100%?

No problem โ€” the calculator divides by your actual total weight, so it correctly handles partial coursework partway through a semester.

How do I figure out what I need on my remaining work?

Enter your target final grade above. The calculator works backwards from your current weighted score to show the average you need on everything still ungraded.
