Solving Linear Equations
A linear equation is an algebraic equation in which each term has an exponent of 1. When graphed, linear equations produce straight lines on the Cartesian plane.
Standard Solving Procedure:
- Eliminate parentheses using the distributive law.
- Combine like terms on both sides of the equal sign.
- Use addition or subtraction to collect variable terms on one side and constant terms on the other.
- Divide or multiply to solve for the coefficient of $x$.
- Substitute the result back into original equation to verify correctness.
