How the Final Exam Math Works
Your course grade is a weighted average of everything graded so far plus the final exam. If the final is worth a fraction w of your grade, your current grade c covers the other (1 − w). To finish with grade d, the final must supply the difference: required = (d − c × (1 − w)) ÷ w.
A Worked Example
Current grade 85%, goal 90%, final worth 30%: (90 − 85 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = (90 − 59.5) ÷ 0.3 = 101.7%. That target is out of reach — but aiming for 88% needs only (88 − 59.5) ÷ 0.3 = 95%, which is tough but possible. Small changes in the goal make a big difference when the final carries heavy weight.
Reading Your Result
- Below 0%: your goal is already secured — the final cannot drag you below it.
- Between 0 and 100%: that is your target score. Build in a buffer and study for a few points higher.
- Above 100%: unreachable. Reset expectations or find extra credit.
