What do you need on the final — or what will your grade be? Two modes.

Not possible on the final alone — ask about extra credit or adjust your target.

(90 - 85 x 0.7) / 0.3 = 101.67%

How Final Exam Math Works

Your course grade is a weighted average: (current grade x its weight) + (exam score x exam weight). Because the final often carries 20–40% of the grade, a strong (or weak) exam performance moves the needle far more than a single homework ever could.

Two Ways to Use This Tool

  • Required score mode: enter your current grade, target grade, and exam weight to find the exact exam score you need — including a verdict on whether it is achievable.
  • Project my grade mode: enter the score you expect on the exam to see your projected final course grade before you walk in.

The Formula

Required exam score = (target grade − current grade x (1 − exam weight)) ÷ exam weight. Example: at 85% with a 90% target and a 30%-weight final, you need (90 − 85 x 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 101.7% — mathematically impossible, which means the target needs adjusting or extra credit.

Study Smarter

If the required score is above 100%, talk to your instructor about extra credit early — not after the exam. Track assignment grades with our grade calculator and plan your semester GPA with the GPA calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

Use the formula: required score = (target grade − current grade x (1 − exam weight)) ÷ exam weight. Enter your numbers in the calculator above and it computes this instantly with an achievability verdict.

What if the required score is over 100%?

Then the target grade is mathematically impossible on the final alone — you would need extra credit or a lower target. The calculator flags this automatically.

How does exam weight affect my grade?

The higher the weight, the more the exam moves your final grade. A 40%-weight final counts nearly as much as your entire semester's other work combined.
